"Fear is the reason this country is where it is today. Fear is a useless emotion. Don't ever make decisions based on fear. Make decisions based on hope and possibility. Make decisions based on what should happen, not what shouldn't. Don't ever make decisions based on fear." -- Michelle Obama
Note that she said that in direct response to a question about assassination from a woman who was clearly worried about the prospect (not from someone who is hoping for it).
She is right, though. George Bush and his cabal of incompetent fascists have driven this country not just off the path, but off the frigging cliff. They have run not a government, but a permanent campaign based on ratcheting up fear and xenophobia. You might recall that during the 2004 campaign, the Department of Homeland Security was playing the Stoplight of Death like it was a fiddle.
This has been echoed by opportunistic thugs who are parroting lines from "the A-rabs are coming to kill you in your sleep" to "them dirty beaners are taking all of your jobs." They have done their level best to destroy everything about Americans that once made us good and decent people and to turn us into a nation of bloodthirsty racists.
But at least the Bush Administration has been as incompetent about instituting fascism as they have been at everything else they tried. We do have a chance to take this country back.
It is up to all of us, now.
