My Grandmother Said: "Only Speak Good of the Dead."

[A] US official said that intelligence had been tracking a "trusted courier" of Bin Laden for many years. The courier's identity was discovered four years ago, his area of operation two years ago and then, last August, his residence in Abbottabad was found, triggering the start of the mission.
Now, can we finally stop pretending that Pakistan is our friend? Bin Ladin wasn't hiding in a cave in the mountains.
[H]e was found not in the remote tribal areas along the Pakistani-Afghan border where he has long been presumed to be sheltered, but in a massive compound about an hour’s drive north from the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. He was hiding in the medium-sized city of Abbottabad, home to a large Pakistani military base and a military academy of the Pakistani Army.
It was as though he was hiding out in a ten-million dollar estate in West Point, NY. The Pakistanis knew he was there. They had to have known.

The compound position's: 34-10-09N, 073-14-33E.

Of course the Pakistani gonernment knew he was there, and your government knew the Pakistani government was lying to them. But Pakistan has the rare priveledge of being a small nuclear power, minor in fact but a nuclear power non-the-less and foreign policy is a way more kid gloves on type of approach than with a non nuke capability country....Allan

Once they had the house surrounded, the U.S. government should have communicated to the Pakistani government that they were about to move on a suspected bin Laden location...

... and recorded all the phone calls coming into the surrounded house. And then broadcast those recorded calls on every news show in the world.

The house reportedly had no telephone or internet connection. Which makes sense because bin Ladin was trying to avoid being located by signals intercept.

He was using couriers to avoid SIGINT detection. But good old ground-level intelligence work found at least one of the couriers.
