You might ask why Microsoft's BK tie-in promotion in Japan has seven patties of beef and over 1,000 calories.
Bloatware. Bloatfood.
Win 7 takes up something like 16Gb on a drive, all to just give one the opportunity to run other programs.
If I were writing the laws, I'm make MS support NT-5 (`00 Pro and XP) forever. NT-5 is possibly the only OS that they ever managed to (eventually) get right.

XP rules (as far as a Windows OS can rule). My laptop is a Vista machine that I'm less than impressed with. The other 2 machines in the house are XP and I like 'em so much better.
Winders is only half the problem,
I run winders, linux and Mac (lepoard)
and I can say Mac annoys me the least linux second and winders is just plain always in the way.
Most of the winder apps (office and friends) are bloated and worse even Office for Mac tends to barf and die though the mac os deals with it better.
In general winders is a weak os with poor security and runs apps that integrate in such a way to further weaken security.
Eck!
Win 7's RAM footprint is much better than Vista's though, basic setup hits ~0.5G so it runs comfortably on most netbooks.
FWIW you can also slim down the disk footprint if required with VLite. It would be nice if MS integrated that sort of functionality.
