The F-104 probably killed almost as many Luftwaffe pilots as did the RAF.

The aluminum lawn dart, eh?
Actually was a decent fighter for what it was designed for -- which is not what the Luftwaffe used it for, thanks to bribes to politicians that forced it upon the Luftwaffe for a role it was ill suited for.
110 Luftwaffe pilots, to be precise. There aren't enough piston hours in the world to prep you to fly a tricked-out high-altitude interceptor in a low-altitude fighter-bomber role in European weather...;-(
I'll bet the survivors weren't amused to see the F-16 called a lawn dart.
From the album "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters":
"We don't just need a fair weather fighter"
"OK, we can make some modifications and call it the F-104G"
"104 G?"
"G for Germany"

Yep, killed a LOT of pilots due to mis-application of the airframe.
