The Asia Times seems to think that is the reason why North Korea shelled South Korean territory today.
Of course, China refuses to recognize the reality that its sometime client state is being run by lunatics. It takes some pretty twisted logic to see being punched in the face as prelude to negotiations, but that apparently is the mindset of the sickos who run the northern half of the old Hermit Kingdom.
It's hard to think of what to do about North Korea that won't make life even harder for the people living there. I suspect that is what North Korea is counting on.

I wonder what life is like as a typical NK citizen. What do they tell you about your country and the world in which it lives? It must seem like they are surrounded by six billion crazy barbarians, who are always plotting and planning against them. And only one father-son team can keep them safe.
Sucks to be them. If only they could learn that.
This is why I thought the US invading Iraq was a good idea. The place was being run by a nutcase, and country as a whole was suffering from it. It's turned into a quagmire for US, but overall I think it's an improvement.
I would be all in favor of invading NK, except we already have two quagmires that we don't need, much less a third. And then there's the PRC, which would be very unhappy about having US on their border.
A coup would change the situation, but if there hasn't been one yet, is there any chance of one in the future?
North Korea will be handled with kid gloves because it may or may not have "The Bomb". Once you become one of the big boys, everyone steps back. The worlds nukes might outnumber North Koreas nukes 50,000 to 1, but that one counts.
As for a coup, it ain't going to happen. The general population is starved, malnourished, uneducated and stunted in physical growth, while the army is fed and in great shape.
