A decade or so ago, I observed that if you had a carry permit, some of the Northeastern states, including New York, were pretty liberal as to where you could carry a gun.
Then came NYSRPA v. Bruen.
In response to that decision, the State of New York revised their concealed carry laws. The effective result of that, in practice, will be to make it illegal to carry a concealed firearm in the state.
This should be no surprise to anyone who has an understanding of what happens when the Supremes make a ruling that is very unpopular with the locals. When the Court ruled that public accommodations had to be desegregated, as Badtux noted, towns across the South reacted by closing those accommodations, including schools. More subtlety, towns and cities slashed school property taxes, impoverishing the public schools, with the usually unspoken justification that whites could take the money they saved on taxes and send their schools to racist academies.
That still goes on, to some degree. I once knew a guy who moved his family from the Miami area to one of the NY counties close to the city. He said that his property takes went up over $20K/yr, but that more than offset by the savings of not having to send his kids to private schools. (It's probably worse, now that DuhSantis is trying to turn the public schools into Trumpist indoctrination centers.)

Let's hope all the Republican's recent objectionable actions give them the Pyrrhic victory they so truly deserve. Here in Michigan all the Republicans that are running seem to be Big Lie spouters and even those involved in the fake elector scheme. The governor candidate Twodoor Dixon platform is "no reason ever for an abortion" and parents are going to run the schools to keep groomers and masks out. My dad used to say "That's like cutting off your nose to spite your face".
Operation Just Let Them Speak is working perfectly. Let 'em have their damned little apocalypse, destroy everything, we can clean up the mess, sweep up the trash, after their spectral being with whom they've entered into some kind of ethereal obligation doesn't float down out of the sky to rescue them all.
As a not necessarily disinterested outside observer, advocating neither yea or nay, I would argue Tenth Amendment, State's Rights. Long the bullhorn of the reich-wing. What the Gestapo Court did with the Dobbs ruling, indeed their entire pogrom to dismantle the regulatory state, long the bullhorn of the reich-wing, was/is effectively turn these things back to the states. Long the bullhorn of the reich-wing. To local control: state, county, municipal.
The state, New York, decided "well ok then, we just don't want people carrying guns, good bad or indifferent." Local control, tenth amendment.
This isn't on the gun-grabbers. Or maybe we don't know who the gun-grabbers are ...
