Germany on Wednesday announced it's offering 5,000 helmets to Ukraine amid fears a Russian invasion is around the corner, in a move that was denounced by Kyiv's mayor as a "joke."
"I received a letter from the Ukrainian embassy, requesting support with military equipment, helmets to be precise," Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht told reporters, per Reuters. "We will supply Ukraine with 5,000 helmets as a clear signal: We are at your side."

Germany has that pesky energy program that is dependent on Russia. Not going to be a blitzkrieg if there's no heat.
Considering the Germans got rid of most of their tanks and their principal infantry rifles are so old they often fail, I'm surprised they have 5000 helmets to give Ukraine.
If the rest of the world can secure energy deliveries to Germany even if Putin shuts down the pipeline, they might change their tune. If the rest of the world weans itself off of fossil fuels, Russia is SOL.

Those who said that western Europe was insane to depend on the USSR, er, Russia for energy don’t look so crazy, now.
I would suggest that any significant German assistance would be counter productive as the Russians would immediately use it for propaganda effect. The Russians are truly paranoid about attacks, and the Germans have a history here…
