I was wondering what years the engines went from "blocky" to the aero-dynamic style pictured here? The later ones are almost art deco.

w3ski, it pretty much began in the early 1930s on the New York Central RR (may their memory be blasted for not preserving one of their Hudsons).
I’d suggest the genesis might go back to the McKeen cars for the UP and SP, back around 1910
