That is what the SAVE Act is: a poll tax designed to stop poorer people and women from voting.
Voters need to prove citizenship. If you don't have your birth certificate available, you'll need to get a certified copy. If your name doesn't match, you'll need a certified copy of your name change or a certified copy of your marriage license-- each one of them if you've been married more than once and have had different surnames.
Or you'll need a valid passport or passport card.
None of that is cost-free. You may need to make repeated trips to your vital records department and pay fee after fee.
All is supposedly to prevent voter fraud, which is both extremely rare and mostly perpetrated by Republicans.
No, folks, the goal is to come up with a way to disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans, the ones more likely than not to vote against the Party of Fascism.
In other words, they want to rig the game.

Of course, you likely have already got a valid ID, as the banks require it, and you need one to drive, and buy smokes and booze and all the other stuff.

You know and I know that the objections to a voter ID law are all bullshit.
For years, my recurring nightmare has been seeing armed men at polling places, demanding to see our papers. Considering how they treated legal immigrants who had their papers in order, and having a "D" next to my name, we might see each other in the detention center.
Banks have never asked for proof of citizenship. Driver”s license (standard, not “Rea ID”l and SSC have been good enogh for them.
But you know that, too.
And so does your party, which is trying to recast this modern poll tax as an IQ test.
The Trumpist Right will lose unless they can keep millions of people from voting. They know that.
And so do you. I thought you might be better than to support a revival of Jim Crow voting rules.
Note to B: A drivers license does not show citizenship. Like in my case I jumped through the hoops to get an enhanced drivers license to return from Canada when i go over there. (Not anymore, Trump fixed that). Luckily I live in the same county I was born in since it turned out my birth certificate wasn't recognized after all these years and using it for ID since it didn't have the imprint on it. Also, I'm retired and have the time to do this during the day.
If i had moved to another state I wouldn't have completed the process and that's just what the Republicans want. They can't win on policy so all they have left is fear, hate and buggering up the election process.
Maybe they will have certain ones of us counting jelly beans in a jar next. They could give the same test they give to those applying for citizenship but that would really hurt the Republicans chances even more.
Funny how you don't need an ID to vote, but you do for day labor for the city of New York in order to sign up to shovel snow.
