Were This Only True

Confidence in driverless cars has soared after Google’s self-driving car chased a cyclist for three miles while unleashing a torrent of abuse and spraying the cyclist with water.
Hell, I'd buy one.

Here's your first brickbat on this one.

I'm a cyclist. I ride, I commute to work. I got hit last year in an intersection by a taxicab that turned left without a signal as I was going straight.

But mostly it's the oblivious drivers in their 3000 lb. machines that think terrorizing cyclists is a harmless game that makes my commute so dangerous.

ASM826, do you stop at stop signs and lights?
And are drivers oblivious or terrorizing gamers?

A few years ago, I was driving along a somewhat twisty road in the foothills. The speed limit was 55MPH. I came around a curve and there were three cyclists on their bikes, riding three-abreast. There was no shoulder and a bit of a drop-off into a patch of woods.

Fortunately, there wasn't any oncoming traffic and I was able to swing around them (albeit with my horn blowing). If there had been oncoming traffic, I couldn't have stopped in time and my choices would have been to have a head-on collision, plow through the cyclists or take a dive into the trees.

I see cyclists nearly every day that blow through stop signs when there are vehicles there. They ride on the wrong side of the road or on the sidewalk. From what I can see, a significant number of cyclists believe that the traffic laws don't apply to them.

So yeah, I don't like those clowns one bit. And when one of them gets clipped, my operating assumption is that it is the cyclist's fault.

If you had come around that turn and there had been a farm tractor? a disabled vehicle? a deer in the road?

You were simply going too fast for conditions. You could not see far enough ahead to make stopping or slowing decisions.

Cyclist have the same right to the lane they are in as an automobile. If a car passes a bicycle on a double yellow line, it is a traffic violation. Whipping past cyclists blowing your horn because they are using the road is an aggressive use of your vehicle.

And yes, bicycles are subject to the same traffic laws. Stop at red lights and stop signs, stay in the travel lane and travel in the same direction as other vehicles, lights at night, etc.
