Live-Blogging Hurricane Tropical Storm Irene

6PM. Winds are still gusting over 50mph. Hasn't stopped people from venturing out to begin to clean up their yards and driveways.

12:30PM. Wind's still strong, but the sky is brightening. Some limbs are down, the road crews have been out clearing them away. The other side of the storm is getting far more rain than here.

9:30AM. Wind is stronger, but nothing remarkable. There have been worse nor'easters. Some tree limbs are down and there are a lot of leaves on the ground. Power has fluctuated a number of times. We shut off the a/c because as the power fluctuated, it would draw too much current and I got tired of going down and resetting the breaker. Looking at the forecasted winds for the airports just east of NYC, the storm's impact is not going to be as bad as they were saying yesterday. Irene has been downgraded to a tropical storm and she is speeding up to 26mph, so the storm should be out of here by this evening.

7AM. Power flickered on and off several times overnight, but it is still on here (obviously). The storm seems to be tracking to go right over Stamford, CT. JFK International may take a direct hit. Winds are gusting near 50MPH. Rain is coming in on heavy bands, then it stops. The CT governor has banned the use of tractor-trailers within the state. High tide is in a few hours, so this should be interesting.

The media is so excited they are peeing themselves.
Tomorrow is the 6th anniversary of "Katrina" and although it passed 40 miles to the east of us we were without power for nearly a week. "No big 'ting".
Friday is the 3rd anniversary of hurricane Gustav. That was a biggy for us as we were in the house when it started disassembling it. We knew how the 3 little pigs felt.
Keep your head down.

I've survived 5 Hurricanes here in Florida one that threatened a direct hit we flew to DC and waited it out up there. This was one of those "could have" storms, could have turned into a 4 over the NC coast and flooded NYC but still did some damage. Not as much as anticipated. Good for you guys.

This was far from the worst I've been through but we have a half million without power including me. Running on aux power (battery and genset).

I figure I'm lucky no trees landed on me.

I understand that weather can be frightening. Out here in Ca. I have been thru a lfetime of storms of all description, some called disaster in fact. It just seems strange how the Weather Service can get all worked up over the arrival of some stomrs and then totally miss others.
Last winter I woke up to a forecast of chance of rain as I watched my dirt driveway turn liquid goo and rushing water. Seriously thought about using the boat to go down to the garage.
It's the ones they miss that Scare me.
Glad you are OK Comrade,

Hurricanes are hard to miss these days, what with government-funded weather satellites and government-funded hurricane hunter aircraft.
