"Blade Runner"-- Really?

They're going to make either a prequel or sequel to "Blade Runner".

Personally, I don't get it. I saw it when it came out. A while back, when I was in Wally-Woild to buy some cartridges, I found the "director's cut" DVD in the $5 bin, so I bought it. I'd read all of the hype about how the director's cut was so superior to the released movie, you see.

Frankly, both in 1982 and 29 years later, my reaction to the movie was then and remains a solid "meh". So it's a mystery set in a dystopian future-- big effing deal. In case anybody hasn't noticed, 95% of the science fiction movies these days are dystopian in nature.* "Blade Runner" was a noir-style detective movie and, compared to "the Maltese Falcon" or "the Big Sleep", not an exceptionally good one.

So color me "unimpressed" by this news.

I'm a fan, but only the interest by Ridley Scott himself has me curious about this project.

The story is no big deal, of course. But I was happy to have even the setting back when it was new. For a SF fan of the 70s, the number of real, actual SF films was tiny. And, it felt like the great stories never made it to the screen.

Blade Runner and Alien were considered great because they didn't fuck anything up. The plots were from the 40s or 50s, but the scenery was good and the special effects weren't embarrassing.

The sci-fi movie industry is STILL frustrating for a 70s SF fan. The plots are from the 50s, or 40s, and sometimes the 30s. And the special effects, for anything but the big budget films, are becoming ever more embarrassing, as the money men realize they can pay fewer and fewer people less and less, (while finding more and more distant people to do that to.)

With all the crazy looting of existing IP, I'm STILL waiting for decent adaptations of Ringworld, Gateway, Ender's Game, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Downbelow Station, Dragonriders of Pern, etc. Heinlein's dead. Loot his library, for fuck's sake!

I really liked Blade Runner. I think it was the atmosphere, more than anything.
