An 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit Japan a little over six hours ago. A tsunami is expected to hit all around the Pacific rim. It was the largest known earthquake to hit Japan and one of the largest in history.
As I write this, Hawaii issued a tsunami warning four hours ago and is evacuating its tsunami warning zone. Similar steps are being taken elsewhere.
No doubt that between the earthquake and the tsunami along the coast in Japan, the damage is extensive. Good Morning America reports that power is out in Tokyo.

Very few casualties for such a magnitude. I heard reports of fires at a nuke power plant and a large oil refinery too. Hope enough infrastructure remains to combat those.
Those are early reports, Allan. The death toll is going to rise significantly, I fear.
Death toll is well over a hundred now....I just watched a video of a sunami, complete with burning building being hurled inland, very sureal!
