Some of those guys are landing and taking off in 100 feet or less of ground roll. Sure, those are "race planes", but they still have to be super pilots to do that.
This year's competition is on May 6-8th.

Makes you wonder about some of the hair-raising situations in which they use those skills.
I can appreciate STOL ops spending most of my A&P years working on Twin Otters and Dash-7s in the Rocky's. Never heard about this gig...awesome!

IIRC from being there last year, the silver cub with the skull and crossbones was pretty kitted out. Paul's cub is the same one he uses for workaday stuff at his lodge Ultima Thule - and aside from those great big tundra tires is about as stripped down as you can get - not even an electrical system!
Like he says... hours and hours and hours..
