GENEVA, Switzerland - A Swiss court granted Roman Polanski bail on Wednesday, accepting $4.5 million to allow him to remain under house arrest at his chalet. The director will stay in prison for up to 10 days while the Swiss government decides whether to appeal. The one amusing note in all of this is that Polanski has spent almost as much time in a Swiss jail as he would have spent in a California one if he had shown up for his sentencing. Earlier stories mentioned that Polanski feared being deported from the U.S., but he effectively deported himself by fleeing.
None of this touches the point that interstate flight is a Federal beef and he could spend a few years on that charge, if the Feds want to push the matter.
The old advice is still true: Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
