I made a trip last weekend. Google Maps gave me directions that saved about four miles over Mapquest, which in turn saved about a mile over the directions I was given by the person who lived there.
Google Maps sucked. Their directions would have taken me to a road with a locked "emergency-only" access gate. Mapquest was slightly better, though their directions involved a bunch of turns over the human-generated directions.
"How do I get there" is still a useful question to ask.

On the other hand, Google Maps does give accurate directions from Darwin,CA to Panamint Springs, CA. My Garmin GPS would send me right off a waterfall(!!!).
(To be fair, Google Maps *also* would route me off the waterfall if I told it "shortest distance" rather than "shortest time", sigh!).
