Representative Charles B. Rangel stepped down on Wednesday as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee after losing support within his party because of ethics violations, shaking up the Democratic power structure in the House and costing New York a powerful seat of influence in CongressRangel is one of the old-style pols who doesn't see anything wrong with accepting a few favors, such as three additional rent-controlled apartments for Rangel's use as his primary residences. Rangel is of the type of politicians that permitted lobbyists and goons like Abramoff to operate in the shadows.

Yeah, but those old-time pols got shit done, they engaged in what old-time machine politicians called "honest corruption", i.e., they skimmed some dough off the side, but they delivered for their constituents. The new-style corrupt pols... meh. All they deliver for their constituents is pain.

There is some truth to that, but the current perpetual campaigning that is going on makes it pretty damned hard to get anything done for anyone.
