Fan; Hitting; Shit

A South Korean navy warship is sinking. It may have been torpedoed.

Things might get a little bit more interesting.

Cranky - last I checked, we had about 15,000 troops in South Korea, we drew down the garrison there to send to Iraq and Afghanistan. The reality is that the South Koreans do not need us to defend us now -- they have a very professional military of about 380,000 regulars armed with modern 1st-world weaponry, and another 400,000 or so reserves who are not quite as well trained or armed but are at least as well trained and armed as anything the North Koreans could muster.

The only reason we have any troops at all in South Korea is as a message to North Korea that attacking South Korea is the same thing as attacking the United States -- i.e. they're there as a tripwire, at the request of the South Koreans. Our guys are sitting there in South Korea with a giant bullseye on them, near any targets the North Koreans might try to vaporize, so that if North Korea launches a nuclear attack on South Korea it is a nuclear attack upon the United States too -- with the expected results if that happens (i.e., North Korea would basically cease to exist, becoming a radioactive wasteland shortly after their first launch against South Korea). South Korea insists on this tripwire as a precondition for not building their own nuclear weapons (which they have the technical capability and scientific knowledge to do, they've been a nuclear power for over thirty years now, since their first CANDU reactors came online).

My guess: a North Korean mini-sub torpedoed a South Korean patrol boat that got too close to where a team launched from the NK sub was conducting espionage operations. This sort of thing happens like the phases of the moon, and likely will come to nothing, just as all past incidents of this nature have.

The crewmen are now talking to the press-stating it was an explosion external to the ship
