Perfect Security Is Not Attainable

The Vatican, unlike the United States, has an adult view of the problem.
[Vatican spokesman] Father Lombardi said it was not realistic to think the Vatican could ensure 100% security for the Pope
Then there are the gutless fear-mongers in the GOP, who are afraid to speak the truth about an issue because it may anger Dick the Torturer:
A half-dozen former senior Bush officials involved in counterterrorism told me before the Christmas Day incident that for the most part, they were comfortable with Obama’s policies, although they were reluctant to say so on the record. Some worried they would draw the ire of Cheney’s circle if they did, while others calculated that calling attention to the similarities to Bush would only make it harder for Obama to stay the course. And they generally resent Obama’s anti-Bush rhetoric and are unwilling to give him political cover by defending him.
Even worse, to my mind, are the craven political hacks who are unwilling to discuss the truth of a national security matter because they are afraid of giving any "political cover" to a guy in the other party. Doesn't matter a fuck to those partisan ghouls if this administration is doing the right thing, but horrors, they might get credit for doing the right thing.

Republicans are just as spineless as Democrats, but only in different areas. They are even more despicable, to my mind.

It's awfully hard to tell them apart these days. The Democrats have had the ability now for a year to start changing things, and they haven't. Instead, they've continued the Bush Administration policies, and labeled those of us who point this out "purists", "irrational", or naive. If there's a difference between the two parties on this point, it's hardly observable, and certainly not of any practical value.

There are a few decent Democrats on the national scene who care about things such as the Constitution and civil liberties. There are zero Republicans at the national level who do.

I guess I'm a little bit terrified now that it has become obvious that terrorist attacks are now a fantastic thing for Republicans and their financial futures.

(Not the average guy who votes Republican, by the way. Those people are never going to be *real* Republicans. I mean politicians and billionaires. Maybe some of the richer multi-millionaires, too.)

The underpants bomber may not have been deliberately let in, but it's now clearly a great strategy for any intelligence or security officer to let the next ones by.
