Other than references to records, the Mudd Clubb and CBGB, the times have only gotten worse. There are a number of different versions of the lyrics on the Intretubes, but one had this as the last two lines.

My favorite one from years ago is Once in a lifetime. He & Eno have a newish release that's pretty good.
Great tune and you're absolutely right. Regardless of the '70s/80s references, the song is time;ess and apropos.
