Georgian Troops Attack!

No, they're not invading Alabama. This is the other Georgia, and they're attacking a bunch of rebels in a place called South Ossetia. That place borders Russia, which backs the rebels. So this has the potential to get very nasty very fast.

Indeed. Russia just sent 600 armored vehicles into the area to support the South Osettians. Which is about twice as many armored vehicles as the entire Georgian Army possesses. Photographs published in the newspaper indicate that probably half the T-90 tanks in the Russian inventory (their most modern tank, and a generation more advanced than anything Georgia has) has crossed into South Osettia. And there are reports that the Russians are bombing major infrastructure targets all over Georgia, and that Georgia has shot down a Russian Tu-22M medium bomber and Su-25 ground attack bomber. If a Tu-22M got shot down, that means Russia is dropping a heavy tonnage of bombs somewhere on Georgia, because those suckers carry sixty-nine 250 pound bombs.

To say that this was a miscalculation of major proportions by Georgia is an understatement. If you are a small fairly weak nation next door to a large surly nation whose military is 20 times the size of yours, there's a phrase to describe the best way of handling that situation: "Don't wake the bear." Georgia did. They're paying. And all that the U.S. will do about is whine, because every swinging dick that can carry a gun is already in Afghanistan or Iraq and besides, who the f*** wants to start WWIII with Russia, anyhow?
