As you likely know by now, one of the foremost racist and homophobic assholes in the country finally died two days ago. No, I'm not going to mention his name. He doesn't deserve that honor, so I'm going to refer to him as Sen. Burncross.
He was an asshole, there is no other way to put it. Burncross ran for office as a divisive crank, playing to the racist fears of constituents who were too stupid to know better or too hateful to care. He did not give a fuck about the human condition or the rights of others from the day he was shat out of his mother's womb until the day they nailed the lid shut on his coffin. Burncross was an old-style race-baiting politician from the days when Georgia Gov. Talmadge encouraged lynchings as a way of appealing to racist voters and when Lester Maddox waved an axe handle in the door of his restaurant to prevent it from being integrated. Burncross, an ardent foe of education, referred to the University of North Carolina as "the university of Negroes and Communists," and you can bet your ass that he didn't use the word "negro."
Burncross later expanded his platform of hatred and bigotry to include gays and lesbians. I know for a fact that more than one highly-qualified candidate for a political appointment into government service withdrew her name because she did not want to have her personal history dragged through the mire by Burncross. About the only good thing that can be said about Burncross is that he is no longer alive. The man was a festering carbuncle on the ass of the nation.
I don't know if there is an afterlife. But if there is, Burncross should spend it as a servant to Nat Turner and Malcolm X.
UPDATE: You might want to read David Broder's column from when Burncross announced his retirement. He referred to Burncross as an unrepentant racist. And he was right.

Nat and Mister X wouldn't put up with him.
