Let's say that you're not Christian or maybe even you're some alien species listening in to what happens here.
You'd probably get the impression that Christianity, at least as it is practiced in America, is a religion that revels in acts of hatred and discrimination towards other people. You might conclude that Christianity is a religion that is based on naked and unalloyed greed. You might even conclude that there is one peculiar sect that, until very recently, held it as a sacrament to rape, abuse and even enslave children.
Of course, if that alien observer were to come to Earth and make those observations, there would be legions of Christians who would protest that no, not all Christians are hateful, greedy, child-molesters, that the aliens shouldn't judge all Christians by those who are grabbing for gold, fucking children, or hating on others.
You see where I am going with this, don't you?

Uh-huh.
They're really not putting their best feet forward on this, are they? Our hymnal, so to speak, does not have a song with the refrain "They will know we are Christians by our hate, by our hate/they will know we are Christians by our hate."
Yes, as an alien (of any type), I would run screaming from folks calling themselves Christian.
(Hmmmm. Sounds like a story...)
