A spokesman for Senator Max Baucus, Democrat of Montana, said early Saturday that the senator nominated his girlfriend, a lawyer who worked for him at the time, for a United States attorney position last March.Ah, the snark just writes itself, sometimes. It's not just that one of the senators who represent the health insurance companies tried to get his girlfriend the job of US attorney back home, it's also that he did get her a job in the Department of Justice. There is no mention whether she got a job as a political appointee (which is marginally OK) or as a career employee (which would be a completely dickish move).
And it is probably no coincidence that Baucus's office released this story late on a Friday, hoping that it wold be forgotten within a day.
Snarking about all that is about as easy as this:
It's not not hard.
Anyway, it's going to be interesting to see what happens in fifteen years when that girl finds this video of her dad making fun of her.
But here is what I don't understand: It was apparently OK for Sen. Baucus to pull strings to get his girlfriend a job, but it was an ethical violation for Sen. Ensign to pull strings to get his mistress's husband a job? Does that make much sense to anyone?

I'm starting to think the legislator should be made up of 100% castrati and women.
Didja ever notice female senators and Congress reps never get dragged into sexual scandals?
Maybe they're too busy working.
That's an excellent idea, Karen! I used to think being a representative or president should be like jury duty. You just pick a random citizen and make them do it for four years. But making sure men REALLY want to help their fellow citizens should cut out most of the bad apples.
