They always had an odd buzz to their sound. I don’t know if that was because of the short stacks, or something else. For an outdated airplane though, he got the job done and quite a few theaters!

Mediocre as a performer, this radial engine P-36 Hawk refitted with Allison V-12 inline engine was flown in every war theatre because it was tough, armored and with self-sealing fuel tanks, well armed and fast enough, especially in a dive. Special tactics allowed it to fly against more maneuverable planes like the Zero. 3rd most produced US 'pursuit ship' of the war after P-47 and P-51, almost 14,000 were built and it was used for ground attack throughout the war despite its obsolescence. It was there when it was needed and was the choice of little kids like me for dangling ceiling model displays because of the gaping intake maw with garish colorful Flying Tiger shark mouth painted on. What a fighter.

It was said that below 10,000 feet it could give most fighters a run for their money.
