The Veterans Administration and PTSD: A Crackdown is Inevitable

First, you should go read this lengthy blog post by Chris Hernandez. Know that he's done his legwork for it.

But go read it. I'll wait.

------------------------------------

A shitload of veterans are gaming the system. The ones who are see this as free money. The VA probably believes that, just like they were hammered for Agent Orange, that it's easier to just approve claims than examine them and require proof.

What you wind up with is the military equivalent of "welfare cheats". You may well remember that certain politicians have waved around tales of "welfare queens" as a tool to attack welfare or any assistance to poor people.

Sooner or later, an ambitious politician may latch onto this issue. Because the fraudsters are costing this country billions of dollars.

When that happens, the veterans who really need help will be the ones who will pay the price.

And meanwhile, those of us with a true need are denied over and over. I've been fighting the bastards for 12 years trying to get my benefits. It got to the point 5 or 6 years ago I had to hire a lawyer to take my case*. I believe that they deny some of us because we are older and they are hoping we will die so they don't have to pay out anything. If they catch some son of a bitch gaming the system, they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent and then maybe the ones needing help can get it.

The part that just chaps my ass is the fact that I have my medical records that show the date of the accident, all of the letters from specialists including the letters recommending discharge due to medically being unable to preform my duties and the fact that I received a medical discharge.

Another part of the problem is too many of the bureaucrats in charge have never served a day in their life and are so high up in government service they can't be fired. When you don't fear for your job, you can make the decisions that the government wants made. Too many veterans are being screwed because of what the drill instructors in boot camp call "that 10% that screw it up for everyone else.

* the fact that there are law firms out there with names like Legal Help for Veterans should tell people that the problem is ongoing and getting worse.
