it wasn't the first time that somebody had dropped bombs from an aircraft, but it was the first time that more than one aircraft was used and the first time that "strategic bombing" was carried out. The idea was then, and remained for decades, that civilian morale could be sapped and the war ended by attacking civilian targets in the far rear areas.
As a way of forcing an enemy to divert military assets from frontline use to air defense, maybe it works. But as a way of draining enemy morale and compelling them to end a war, it's been a failure, time and time again.

As I remember my lessons, it was just two zeppelins, off course, that ended up bombing Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth (both located just a few miles from where I grew up) on the night of Jan 19-20.
There's no idea so demonstrably stupid that military thought leaders won't keep using for at least five wars.
Note that "middleman" applies to the United Way as well. Local people trying to direct money well, but there's a very substantial overhead cost (bylaws require less than 25%, ouch)
Seems like it worked in Viet Nam w/ B52s making trips to Haiphong/Hanoi
I disagree about the B-52s. What worked was mining Haiphong harbor.
