The federal government Wednesday rejected a request to let young teenage girls buy the controversial morning-after pill Plan B directly off drugstore and supermarket shelves without a prescription. ... In a statement, FDA Administrator Margaret A. Hamburg said she had decided the medication could be used safely by girls and women of all ages. But she added that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius had rejected the move.My guess is that the Obama Administration is betting that whoever is nominated by the GOP will not sit well with the Christian Taliban. What they want to do is not give those folks a reason to go to the polls. A "Plan B goes on the OTC shelves" would give them a reason.
It's a good think that the Talibanistas don't regard taking pain meds as a sin. Otherwise, we'd need a prescription to buy a bottle of aspirin.

I don't follow: (a) The Talibanistas won't like the GOP candidate; so therefore (b) we DON'T want them voting??? I'm obviously missing something here. . . .
The Talibanistas aren't going to vote for the Dem candidate in any event. If they don't like the GOP candidate, they're presumably less likely to vote at all. If Plan B were made OTC, the GOP candidate would promise to undo that. That might make the Talibanistas vote after all. Which the Dems don't want.
Plan B will still be available w/o a scrip to anyone 17 or older. Having a medical professional explain the complex nature of a powerful drug to a kid under 17 sounds like a safety issue. It's critical that we instill in our sons and daughters that they must get off their asses and work to protect Planned Parenthood and reproductive rights. One of the biggest issues I've come in contact with is the apathy from a generation that doesn't remember what life was like before 1973, and Roe v Wade decision. That said, I've raised kids & worked with teens...experience tells me that complex directions & warnings re: drug interaction are valid concerns for a kid that may not comprehend the fine print that comes with the pill.
