World War II began in Europe, when Germany invaded Poland. The Soviet Union invaded 17 days later, the two aggressors divided Poland between themselves. That alliance lasted less than two years, ending when Germany invaded the Soviet Union.

On land, the invasion of Poland was followed by the Phoney War, also known as the "Sitzkreig." Things were more serious at sea, the Second Battle of the Atlantic started almost immediately and went on until the end of the war.

I think there are some folks in Czechoslovakia who might put the date a little earlier.

Though the Polish invasion did start things rolling with vengeance.

DCap, your was much more detailed.

Deb, the Czechoslovakians have a point, though there wasn't much in the way of shooting, at least compared to the invasion of Poland.
