Not only "no," but "no fucking way in hell!" This is why:
The system would require all cars and trucks be equipped with global satellite positioning technology, a transponder, a clock and other equipment to record how many miles a vehicle was driven, whether it was driven on highways or secondary roads, and even whether it was driven during peak traffic periods or off-peak hours.Which means that the government, federal, state, whatever, would have access to where you have driven and at what time.
I respectfully submit that anybody who does not think that government and law-enforcement would not be slavering to have their hands on that data has mush for brains. Anyone who believes that such information would not be used for political smear campaigns must spend all of their days watching the Disney Channel. If one of these goes into my car, it will be amazing how the GPS antenna accidentally winds up being wrapped in layers of duct-tape and tinfoil.
This idea needs to be squashed, now.

so lets follow this through to a logical end. GPS units installed in all new cars, what about the 66 million cars on the road the first year with no GPS, how do they get money from these people? Gas Tax and so those with the GPS in thier cars somehow pay less for gas for years until just about everyone has a GPS, probobly 20 years and then not everyone has one of the GPS thingies. How do they (Govt.) get paid, send me a bill for my miles driven, what if I don't have the money, do they disable my car? Someone should tell LaHood that the pot today is much stronger now because he must be you know smokin a blunt now and then. There is no other explanation for thinking this will ever work. I could sit here all day and punch holes in it.
And this comes from our new administration. We'll have to fight just as hard against those that are supposed to be on our side. Stick it up your ass -how fucking dumb are you assholes after just going through eight years of boosh.
Just goes to show ya not all fucktards are republican.
Dusty, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood is a Republican.
The idea of taxing miles driven is wrong on so many levels I hardly know where to begin. It makes no concessions to people who drive fuel-efficient vehicles; Hummer drivers and diesel Rabbit drivers are taxed exactly the same. Removing incentives to "think small" (as VW said 50 years ago) is not the way to achieve energy independence or protect the environment. Tax at the pump, please, and the higher the better.
Good grief. We drive no more than necessary...about one shopping/errand trip per week at most. To work...which is about 90 miles per day; we just can't get Boeing to build a plant within bicycle distance and we can't afford a home in King Country.
I wasn't clear..Obama picked this yahoo knowing full well that his ideology was rife with neocon beliefs.
Sorry.
The Big O hasn't been in office long, but personally I think he has made some shitty decisions based on his picks for his cabinet. Between the idiot neocons and those w/personal problems that had to recuse themselves he is ranked in the top ten on a scale of bonehead decisions whilst holding the most powerful job in the land.
But Dusty,
He only sat in Trinity Baptist for twenty years before he figured out what Wright's views on the world were.
This is a bad idea on so many levels, not the least of which is that I don't see how it's going to make the way we pay for roads any fairer than it is now.
It's almost as if they just look at every department of government as another way to control us.
Good grief, I sound like one of those crazy people who live in a cabin in the woods.
