Bush personally lobbied recalcitrant Senate Republicans after Vice President Dick Cheney failed to round up support Wednesday during a contentious two-hour meeting.More here.
"If we don't do this, we will be known as the party of Herbert Hoover forever," Cheney told them, according to a Senate Republican aide, evoking the president whose inaction is widely blamed for helping trigger the Great Depression in the early 1930s.

The NYT has a very interesting piece on the "$75 per hour wage" memehere. Planning to post on this eventually myself, but I enjoy your commentary, and am curious regarding your reaction. Short version is that most of the difference between Big 3 wages and Japanese auto wages is the result of the Big 3's history of establishing middle-class wages and retirement benefits. Japanese automakers do not have an enormous pool of retirees they are expected to support. Detroit does.
Lockwood, I've read that article. I have no doubt that the GOP is trying to destroy the wage-earning middle class.
