Think about it: The Democrats have pretty much given the Republicans what they wanted on the border. Lots more money, making the Trumpist border guards happy. No pathway to citizenship for those already here, a provision to slam the border shut if crossings go too high, changes to asylum provisions. All stuff on the GOP's wish list. Nothing on the wishlist of the Democratic party's progressive wing.
And the Republicans, because their boss wants to run on the issue, said no. That puts them in the same class as Yasir Arafat, in that they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
Border security was a big issue for Republicans and they just gave it to Biden. Biden can say:
"Look, nobody in my party really liked this bill. But I thought it was important for the country to do something, and so I agreed to give the Republicans a lot of what they wanted. I also think it's important to help Israel and to help Ukraine resist Russian aggression. Some of that also was not popular with some of my party, but I went against them because it's in the national interest to do so.
"But the Republicans decided to not do anything on the border because it's in the interest of their party's leader to not do anything. They have, time and time again, placed the interests of their party ahead of the interests of the country.
"This shows the truth of the matter: Republicans are not loyal to the United States of America, they are only loyal to Donald Trump. They are not Americans, they are Trumpists."
In Germany, in the 1930s, people stopped taking oaths of office to Germany. Instead, they took them to one man. Republicans are no different.
