Grifting the Gullible to Pay the Lawyers

Coupled with FEC data from 2022, AP’s review found that Save aMerica, Trump’s presidential campaign and his other fundraising organizations have devoted $76.7 million to legal fees over the two years.

You almost have to admire the great con job the TOFF has pulled out to get people around the country to send in money to pay the legal fees of an alleged billionaire.

Save aMerica, a Trump PAC that at one point had more than $100 million in the bank, nearly went broke last year amid the crush in legal fees. The super PACs paid for attorneys for both the former president and some of his aides that have been named in the indictments, including Walt Nauta and Carlos de Oliveira. The pair were both charged in the case surrounding Trump’s handling of classified documents after he left the White House.

The bills are still biting at Trump’s heels: The Times added that 10% of every dollar the former president raises from supporters is being directed to Save aMerica, which mainly pays the legal fees
.

So even if Trump's supporters think that they are giving that bloated billionaire money for his campaign (the one that he promised he would self-fund), the Orange Jesus is skimming 10% off the top to pay his lawyers who are defending him from his own misdeeds.

I'll bet that the shade of John Gotti is wondering why he didn't try running for office and getting supporters to pay for his lawyers.

I dunno.

Trump's response to his legal challenges, through what he says in and outside of courtrooms, and what he has his lawyers say in the same settings, seems mainly directed at the political campaign rather than any non-suicidal legal strategy. Donors to his campaign are arguably getting more campaign bang for the buck off his court appearances than if Trump spent the money instead on boring old commercials.

Trump gets plenty of free media off his rallies, the more rabble-rousing and outrageous the latest verbal atrocity the more such free media. It's not as if he needs a huge budget for commercials, which are largely outdated by his new approach to politics. His courtroom appearances are just a variation on his rallies, and if the rallies are a valid campaign expense, so are his courtroom appearances.
