Rewriting History

What the apologists for the slaveowners are doing.

Comedy Central goes after them:

If you look at this map of where slaves were owned in 1860, it will become clearer why West Virgina broke away and why there was hostility to the war in the mountainous regions of the South.

People who say the Civil War was not about slaves remind me of the people who say the invasion of Iraq was not about oil. If Iraq had been oil-less -- like, say, Sudan -- do you think the U.S. would have invaded? DOH! Of course not! Similarly, if the South had not had slaves, do you think they would have seceded in 1861? Urrhm... NO!

And the hilarious thing about those who celebrate Southern "democracy" is that their "President" was never elected by the people of the South. He was installed by the secession convention because he'd been Secretary of War some years before and successfully introduced a new hat. No, I'm not joking. That was Secretary of War Jefferson Davis's signature accomplishment: A new hat for the U.S. Army.

So anyhow, slavery, oil, you can claim they had nothing to do with their respective war, but if you say so, you're either a liar, or a moron. That's the only two choices, yo.

When the sainted Lincoln freed the slaves Jefferson Davis (who should have HUNG for treason) said in the strongest terms that the south DID secede over slavery
Christ on a crutch of COURSE they did, and now the south is re-writing history and want us (including me personally)a YANKEE Northern Liberal decendents of Irish who fought for the Union to believe that they seceded peacefully (ask Fort Sumter) so remember folks, the south will NOT be permitted to rise again...
The Union Forever Hurrah boys Hurran

Well, Tom, frankly I think we need to let the South become independent peacefully, then deport all the Republicans down there. The place is already a festering pestiferous pit of crime, ignorance, and bible thumping, they could hardly make it worse (but I'm sure they'll try). Of course, Bakersfield, Stockton, and Orange County would end up depopulated here in California, but I'm sure we can find plenty of hardy Austinites and Atlantans to take their place :).

The big mistake made after the American Civil War was when the Confederates didn't get the post-WW2 de-Nazification treatment, where even the mention of the word "Nazi" or "Hitler" in a classroom is prison time in modern Germany. Same deal should have held for "Confederate" and "Jefferson Davis". Evil motherfuckers were responsible for the death of probably as big a percentage of the American population as Hitler was of the European population, they shouldn't have been allowed to be idolized after the Civil War.

I would LOVE to let them go, but that can never happen, we fought war to prevent that, some 500,000 Union and Confederate dead.
I think we can wait them out
(at least I hope we can)

Hey Bad Tux, have you a penguin on your telly?
