It looked like the hottest of days, with the blue haze. The kind of day where sunlight has weight on your head and shoulders, and you gasp each time you step outside.

But it was a fairly cool and nice day, with a good breeze.

People I know said they could smell the smoke. I couldn't. I remember fires in the 90's, several states away, which did the same thing, and which I could smell. But I was younger then.
