Not a pretty thing when a four-star general is involved.
I don't think it was "poor judgment". I think McChrystal knew exactly what he said. He's been called back for a rug-dance. Even if he survives this gaffe in his current post, if McChrystal has ambitions of going further in the Army, he's done. Generals get fired for this shit. We can suffer the consequences of losing this piss-ant war. We cannot suffer the consequences of undermining the principle of civilian control of the armed forces, regardless of how much the Republicans will bleat and moan about this (as they did nearly sixty years ago).
Or they're supposed to get fired for this shit. Time was that McChrystal would be given an engraved revolver in a felt-lined wooden box and there would be only one round in the cartridge block.
He should do the right thing and fall on his sword. If not, he should be relieved and send off to be the Army liaison officer to the military detachment at the former NAS Adak.

Dear Miss Fit:
I find the conflation of Gen. McChrystal's melt-town and poor, exhausted Gen. Petraeus' zoning out at a Senate hearing to be troubling. Is there something going on at the top of the military hierarchy that is stressing the 4-stars to the point of dysfunctionality? Is there soon going to be a Very Loud Noise?
Regards,
Frank
Petraeus might have been suffering from jet lag.
I read one article that claimed McChrystal was fed up with being considered less than loyal to Obama (for whom he says he voted); it struck me as an odd way to prove loyalty to piss and moan about everything and everyone in the Administration. I do think he might be right to bitch that Afghanistan is not something we can win, alas.
