When you get in a tight place and everything goes against you till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the time and the place the tide will turn.Or, on the other hand, that's the point where you're going to get overrun and everyone in your unit will wind up being slaughtered, so you'd better have your extraction route planned out. Air support wouldn't hurt any, either.

At first glance seems stupid.
The first is persevere keep the path and the second is when that is a known path to failure it was wise to plan a way out to try again another day. Seems in like being able to be there to try again is not without merit.

I take it that you've never been to a Star Trek convention? Galaxy Quest was a terrific satire of the Trekkies.
Indeed it was great satire with sub D grade production, likely intentional.
But a good quote none the less.
