A former officer with the St. Paul Police Department in St. Paul, Minnesota, was sentenced today to six years in prison after a jury found him guilty of a civil rights violation.
Brett Palkowitsch, 31, was sentenced on May 21 after being found guilty of using excessive force against an unarmed civilian. At the sentencing hearing, Palkowitsch waived the right to appeal his conviction and publicly apologized for his use of excessive force.
What the DoJ's press release doesn't set forth is when this went down.
The sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Wilhelmina Wright at the federal courthouse in St. Paul comes after a jury in November 2019 found Palkowitsch guilty of depriving Frank Baker of his civil rights on June 24, 2016. As part of his sentencing, Palkowitsch, 33, must serve three years of supervised release.
What's interesting is that I have no memory of the Hamberder Scarfer pointing to this case as proof that his DoJ does prosecute bad cops. Didn't anybody go on Fox and Fiends to whine how the DoJ was unfairly prosecuting a cop who took down a SBM?
