A Bad Month

Roberta X has this month lost both of her cats, Tommy and Slinky.

They were both elderly cats; Roberta and Tam gave them good lives. Not that that is any small comfort when one's beloved pet(s) die.

Dear Miss Fit:

Y'know, I believe - really, really believe - that the fact that your friends can look back on having provided a good life for their critters is and ought to be a real comfort.

We make a deal when we take a critter into our lives. We bring food, and care, and attention to needs - and they bring unquestioning love. Of course, we get the best of the deal, but the way of the world is such that the day comes when we have to let them out. And I know, that last trip to the vet is about the hardest thing any of us ever do. That is when we pay them back for all of the love.

The thing that makes it bearable is knowing that you "gave them a good life" - part of which is letting them go when it's time to go. So now, your friends will be sad for a while but their solace lies entirely in remembering that "good life." And I, too, extend my condolences to your friends.

Regards,

Frank (who hangs out with Henry, a 15.5 year old little dog whose time is near. The good news is...he doesn't know that.)
