I would suspect that any gunfight inside a starship would take place using something like a Glasser safety round, not ball rounds. You don't want your ammo hitting something critical to the functioning of the ship and have to say "oops!" as all your air dumps out to space (shortly thereafter to say "foomp!" as all your insides dump out to space).

As for the episode in question, I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD, since I don't have a television.
