Considering that John McCain has said in the past that he doesn't understand economics, his decision to suspend his campaign would seem to have more to do with the fact that his poll numbers are rapidly going south.
"I'm losing this campaign, so I'm asking that we all stop campaigning."
UPDATE: From Jack & Jill, it's not a good idea to piss off David Letterman.

I completely agree.
BUT, the question is whether McCain can turn it all around some way.
Is his plan to "Learn" economics? Experts study economics their entire life - and they have trouble getting the US out of the mess.
It will be interesting to follow the polls the next couple of weeks.
I use a widget to keep track of the progression of polls. The widget shows the election polls by strength of states.
In addition to other different graphical visualizations of data, this one displays the progression of votes over time.
Hereby you can see how/if the states have moved!
It gives a great overview and it is updated as the polls come in!

... and its easy to put on your blog and fits in your sidebar!
Make a difference, keep on voting!
I loved that McCain is running scared. And Letterman is correct- let Sarah Palin keep campaigning. The more she says, the more she proves that McCain was a pandering jackass to choose her.
All this proves one thing- McCain cannot handle pressure.
