Military Imbecile-in-Chief

President" Donald Trump has tweeted that Russia should "get ready" for missiles to be fired at its ally Syria, in response to an alleged chemical attack near Damascus on Saturday.

"Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'" Mr Trump said in his tweet.
What sort of idiot tells an adversary what he is going to do? If Trump was a mid-level bureaucrat, he'd be on his way to Jon Pollard's old cell at a supermax.

Machiavelli's Fifth Rule of War: "No proceeding is better than that which you have concealed from the enemy until the time you have executed it."

Trump is applying the rules of hucksterism to military matters. This is likely not to go very well.

"Why do we keep broadcasting when we are going to attack Syria. Why can't we just be quiet and, if we attack at all, catch them by surprise?"

"What other country tells the enemy when we are going to attack like Obama is doing with ISIS. Whatever happened to the element of surprise?"

Agreed, handing out a timeline was ill advised. On the upside, if he's only launching missiles, the early warning doesn't help them kill our people, only our wallets.

It has, on the other hand, got both Syria and Russia scurrying to secure vulnerable assets, just as you would think it would, lessening the value of each missile strike he has now boxed himself into making.
There was other news tonight, though, about what response options are actually being considered, and they sounded somewhat saner in their underpinnings, but to my mind just as questionable in their advisability.
Like how the missile strikes he ordered last year didn't deter Assad from using chemical weapons many times since then like he wanted them to, so "wider options" are being considered.
I don't have a good feeling about this, but in all honesty, it's been hard to have a good feeling about Syria since, I don't know, 1982?

On the other hand, if Russia is claiming the ability to reliably shoot down our cruise missiles, tossing a few out to test that might be a worthwhile intelligence effort. Of course, you'd have to have appropriate assets in place in advance to watch the response, in order to gather anything really useful. This flustercluck of an administration is unlikely to manage that.

He's so childish, and such a bully, he can't help but threaten before he actually does something. (Spending millions to re-arrange sand. And perhaps kill some civilians.)

Well, now he's done it, so we'll see what happens.
