There was a time when I believed that would not be possible. I stopped believing that eleven years ago.

I also think that it may be too late. The time to stop it was then, but too many people in this country were blinded by fear and they lost hold of what made this country great. Too many people thought that torture and a system of black prisons around the world was just peachy. Those who spoke out for our bedrock principles were derided and told that "the Constitution is not a suicide pact."

A pack of terrorists could never bring down this country on their own. But casting aside our guiding principles in the name of fighting a "global war on terror" is doing just that. We lost our way long before this current president was even elected to the Senate. Just listen to politicians (like Lindsey Graham) who are falling all over themselves to approve a regimen of extrajudicial murder, the same men who defended the use of torture. The same men who defended an offshored Gulag. The same men who swore an oath to defend the Constitution.

This war on terror has cost us our soul as a nation. We have become the world's most powerful rogue state.

And somewhere in Hell, the shade of Osama bin Ladin is laughing himself silly.
