I'm not going to rant on this, for now. I'll let BadTux do it.
But, still. The Democrats say "this program (S-CHIP) works and here are some real people it has helped." And what is the reaction of the Republicans? They go after the kids, they personally attack the kids, they Swift-Boat the kids.
Even some Republicans are appalled.
So the Wingnuts are pro-life until the kids are born, and then after that, fuck them if life is hard. Fuck them if their parents are poor and cannot afford insurance. Fuck them if they come down with a life-threatening ailment. Fuck them if the schools are no good. Fuck them if the streets are crime-ridden. Fuck them for not winning the "lucky sperm" lottery and being born rich.
"Compassionate conservative" is indeed an oxymoron. What a pack of mean-spirited weasels.
(p.s., so i ranted anyway. so sue me.)

But Misfit, it's all about lifestyle choices. That little girl with a hole in her heart? It's only right that she be allowed to die a miserable death for an easily fixable birth defect because of choices that her parents made. Remember, Right to Life(tm) is an offer that becomes void at birth for tighty-righties.
And oh, you point out that the little girl had no choice as to which parents she was born to, and should thus not be killed for the sins of her parents (which is what depriving her of the surgery will do), and you see the real face of the conservative movement. The regular tighty righty will say "oh wah life sucks doesn't it?". The intellectual tighty righty will say, with straight face, "well, she should have chosen to be born to a family with money rather than a working class family that can't afford insurance." WTF? How does a fetus choose what family it's going to be born to? But yes, I actually had one of Tom Delay's controllers actually tell me that once, in my brief stint as a Republican in Houston. Apparently the intellectuals behind the tighty righties live with themselves by embracing some mighty freaky metaphysics where the normal mechanisms of human reproduction do not apply...
When I moved back to Louisiana I immediately re-registered as a Democrat, because having seen the stench close up as to what the Republican party had become (this being the early 90's), I wanted no more to do with it. Some folks, like John Cole, are a bit slower, in that it took swift-boating a 12 year old to finally get John to leave the Republican party. But I don't think it's possible to be an ethical Republican in today's day and age, the entire conservative movement has become an intellectually and ethically bankrupt movement of assorted neo-fascists, thugs, goons, and delusional thinkers.
When I think of the inability of 110th Congress's failure to over-ride one veto or make no compromise on "War on Terror" it shows a grave error in judgment. It is getting more grave by the day.
When I think of the failure to over-ride the S-CHIP veto, I remember the only reason the GOP won the Presidency is they are a shade less idiotic in there campaigning.
We will all need to pull together to keep the idea of the United States alive.
