In a solemn display of bipartisan unity, congressional leaders praised Democratic Rep. John Lewis as a moral force for the nation on Monday in a Capitol Rotunda memorial service rich with symbolism and punctuated by the booming, recorded voice of the late civil rights icon. But because Lewis beefed with Trump in the past, Trump is churlishly and childishly refusing to pay his respects. He's sending "mini-me" Pence, instead.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Lewis the “conscience of the Congress” who was “revered and beloved on both sides of the aisle, on both sides of the Capitol.” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell praised the longtime Georgia congressman as a model of courage and a “peacemaker.”
“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” McConnell, a Republican, said, quoting the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. “But that is never automatic. History only bent toward what’s right because people like John paid the price.”
In a time when a little bit of grace and simple courtesy would go some way in helping to heal the country, Trump is going to stay in his bunker and rage-tweet.

I'm glad he didn't attend -- he would somehow some way have made it all about himself.
Bipartisan my ass. A facade, lipstick on a pig.
They were fakin' it for the cameras.
Moscow Mitch at least showed up to pay his respects, even if he opposed everything that Lewis stood for,
Trump can't even muster that shred of decency.
Yeah, it was a dick move, but I also don't see how he could have been there without sullying the occasion.

trump should have been told up front that his presence wasn’t welcome ..... then he surely would have been there.
Doug, you are correct on both contexts. The only way to “win” in any meaningful way would have been to have Donnie release a statement praising Lewis’ fight and stating he would not attend so as to not detract from the memorial with a disruptive presence.
Nevermind that Lewis said he was illegitimate and led a boycott of the inauguration. You do something like that to me, I won't come to yours either, especially if it means sitting thru an hour plus of personally directed crap.
Comrade: you were all giddy when Herman Cain got sick, aren't you gonna do a little dance on his grave?
No. He had family who loved him.
As for Trump, nobody said he had to go to the funeral. He could have paid his respects on Capitol Hill. If he wanted to not get yelled at, he could have come out from his bunker after his post-midnight rage-tweet and taken a quick hop up. It would have taken him less time than it takes a normal human to eat a Bk Whopper.
He had the same family when he got sick. As for the rest, you're dreamin.
Then why don’t you just buzz off, Donas? Today, I have had my fill of taking crap from the likes of you.
