Fake Documents Alert

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow warned other media outlets on Thursday that she believes she was provided forged National Security Agency documents alleging collusion between a Trump campaign official and Russia's efforts to influence last year's presidential election.
...
“Somebody, for some reason, appears to be shopping a fairly convincing fake NSA document that purports to directly implicate somebody from the Trump campaign in working with the Russians in their attack in the election,” she said.
Your guess is as good as mine (or hers) as to who would forge such stuff and then release it.

I'd suspect the Russians. Getting fake documents out there which alleged Trump's a butt-monkey of Putin and then disproving them would help take the starch out of the case against Trump. It's the sort of feint that the Russians excel at.

Second in the line of suspects would be the Trump administration/campaign, for the same reasons.

I doubt it was the Russians - the clues that made it evident that this was a simple copy-paste job would never have slipped by a professional organization with decades of experience in forging documents. Hell, the Russians probably have clean letterheads from all the US agencies stashed away.

Maddow recalled for us the similar fake documents that cost Dan Rather his job, back the days of Bush 2; I'd be looking at personnel in common with Dubya and Trump.

Well, whoever did it, now we have that as something we know we're contending with.
It would seem that at least someone is taking the reporting about the Russia scandal seriously enough to want to blow it up, but when you get into message manipulation attempts it's hard to know what's going on.
I'm glad that she reported it the way she did, and took note when on the same show Richard Engel congratulated her for "not stepping on the land mine."
