In Lieu of...

When I was a young child, my family lived in the Boston area. One of my teachers was a folk music buff and she would sing various songs if we were good in class. One day, she sang "M.T.A." One of the smart-asses in the class asked her why Charlie's wife just didn't give him a nickel, instead of a sandwich.

Hey, I started to wonder why she didn't include a nickel with the sandwich, too, but the song was more a campaign song than a story and wasn't supposed to logic that way.

Boston's MBTA is not a 24-hour system; Charlie would have been thrown off at whatever end of the line's last arriving train.

It's still a fun song to sing, though.
