Note that he dispenses with the "they gave their lives" line pretty quickly. Virtually every soldier and sailor goes off to war thinking that he'll come through it all right and get to come home to raise a family and grow old with his (or her) loved ones. Rooney is right: Their lives are taken from them.
When they are sent to fight and possibly die for no damn good reason, we dishonor their sacrifice. Soldiers do not get to chime in on whether what they are being sent to do is right or not. It is up to us, both the politicians and the voters, to make certain that their blood is shed for a just reason.
