Allende-Style Suicide

The rampaging deputy sheriff in Wisconsin shot himself in the head three times.

Now I'm not losing sleep over this one. But if anyone has a rational explanation of how he managed to stick a .40 Glock under his chin, shoot himself twice in the head (without either killing himself or losing consciousness), and then shoot himself one more time in the side of the head, I'd really like to hear it.

There have been cases of people blowing off their jaw or blinding themselves using a shot under the chin; the problem is that they don't always have the angle correct, and it blows out through their faces instead of through the brain. There have also been people who have shot themselves in the temple at the wrong angle and just blown out their eye on that side. Everything always looks easier in the movies.

Yes, but he (purportedly) shot himself in the head twice before he shot himself to death. I'd have thought he'd have lost consciousness somewhere along the way, BTWFDIK.

I've heard of someone shooting themselves in the head multiple times with a .38 Special that way, but a .38 Special is a much weaker round than a .40 S&W, even if the S&W's nickname is "Short And Weak". It may be "Short And Weak" compared to the 10mm round from whence it was derived, but it is still a powerful round and I'd think someone would have passed out from shock after the first two rounds...

Oh well, if he got a little "help" from his cop buddies, it just removes the need for a trial, I guess. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Had a high school friend that took an round from an AK through the head over in Vietnam; he woke up during the MediVac, and got the attention of a corpman, since they thought he was dead. He had to get metal plates in each side of his head, but it didn't affect his intelligence or knowledge at all.
The .40 isn't as powerful as most people believe; it is going relatively slow, and can glance along bone at an angle as easily as a .38 Special. It isn't a real lot different from the old 38-40.

Every person and every situation is different. You would be amazed at what some people can do when you think they should be unconscious or dead.

I'm betting bobg has it right. If he had his head tilted back a little, the rounds could easily have exited his face without killing him.

After the second shot under the chin failed, the final shot was to the side of the head. I think after the second try, if I was still (marginally) alive, I'd try something different too.

That's gotta hurt.

Chief, that's about it.

But while I can see screwing it up once, twice?

Maybe, though. Once I read of a guy who tried to kill himself by drilling into his skull. Each time the drill bit hit the lining of the brain (the dura matter?, he lost consciousness. he did that eight or nine times.

Anyway, whether he shot himself of whether he had an assisted suicide, well, I'm not losing sleep over it. Like Badtux noted, it just saves the bother of a trial.
