The Russians have always been profligate with the lives of their own men. Knowing that is why up to twice as many men have fled Russia as were "mobilized".

Not even issued a rifle back then. Damn. Now, looking at the abuse on some of the AKs issued recently, I'm not sure which end is more dangerous.
